Fast track enquiry into AGP MLA's attack

Guwahati, Dec 15 (UNI) Assam government today assured of a fast track investigation into the attack on Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) MLA Padma Hazarika in Tezpur on Thursday night.

Condemning the attack, state government spokesperson and Cabinet minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma said, ''We strongly condemn the attack and regret the incident.'' Refuting allegation of involvement of any militant group in the attack so far, he said, ''It could be a case of personal animosity. We are looking into all aspects and the culprits will be booked soon,'' Mr Sharma said. The MLA was attacked when he was returning home after taking part in the panchayat election preparation. He suffered four bullet and a grenade splinter wounds.

Denying any lack of security cover for the opposition legislator, Dr Sharma said Mr Hazarika was assigned four PSOs, including one PSO with an AK 47, after the latter had approached the chief minister with information of threat.

The minister further said that the government had alerted all leaders of possible violence in view of the coming Panchayat polls.

BJP demands creation of 'Cow Protection and Development' ministry

Lucknow, Dec 15 (UNI) The BJP today demanded the setting up of cow protection and development ministries at the central and state levels. Addressing newspersons here, BJP's Cow Development Cell national president Radhey Shyam Gupta said here that despite repeated assurances, state governments had failed to check cow slaughter.
