SC to lay down guidelines for entertaining PILs

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Supreme Court today decided to lay down guidelines for the courts in the country for entertaining PILs, in view of the two-judge bench judgement telling Indian Judiciary not to indulge in 'judicial activism' to the extent of converting it into 'judicial adventurism'.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Raveendran and J M Panchal decided to consider the PIL filed by an NGO, 'Prajwala', seeking directions to the government to treat the females arrested for immoral trafficking as victims and not as accused and also to rehabilitate them.

The petition was referred to the three-judge bench by a two-judge bench headed by Justice S B Sinha, who refused to hear the PIL in view of the order passed by a bench comprising Justices A K Mathur and Markandey Katju telling the Judiciary not to overstep its limit by encroaching into the domain of other organs of the State, namely Legislature and Executive.

Incidentally, Justice Markandey Katju is sitting today with Justice H K Sema and not with Justice A K Mathur.
