Guwahati, Dec 14 (UNI) In continuing violence in Assam militants todat gunned down a BJP leader and critically wounded an AGP MLA.
Unidentified insurgents killed veteran BJP leader Munindra Singh Laskar at his Rangia residence last night.
He was at home talking to his business associate when the rebels walked in and shot him dead. Laskar was a senior BJP and RSS functionary before he fell out and quit the party.
In a separate incident suspected Bodo militants attacked Asom Gana Parishad MLA Padma Hazarika near Tezpur in Sonitpur district late last night. He was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition with a bullet still inside his body.
Meanwhile, party leader and former Union minister Birendra Prasad Baishya suffered critical injuries in a road accident near Neille in Morigaon district while on his way from Guwahati to call on the injured colleague today.
Doctors at the Tezpur Army Base Hospital said Mr Hazarika was hit by four bullets, of which one was yet to be taken out. He also sustained grave grenade splinter and burn injuries.
Though he continued to be kept in the Intensive Care Unit(ICU), he was out of danger, the doctors added.
Suspected Bodo militants had ambushed Mr Hazarika's vehicle at Hazarimal, near Tezpur, when the MLA was returning alone through the national highway after taking part in the Panchayat election preparation.
He drove his vehicle for some distance even after receiving bullet injuries and managed to escape through a nearby paddy field after abandoning the car. Militants followed his vehicle and burnt it down.
Mr Hazarika, a hugely popular MLA from Sootea, was later brought to the hospital after villagers spotted him.
A spontaneous bandh was observed in Tezpur town today and the local unit of the AGP also took out a protest rally.
In Sootea, local people blocked NH 52 till noon and also ghearoed the police station. They demanded postponement of the Panchayat polls in the constituency and a CBI probe into the attack.
The officer in-charge of Sootea police station has already been suspended.
The AGP, condemning the attack, demanded dismissal of the government. They submitted a memorandum to the Governor in this regard at the Raj Bhawan here today.
AGP vice-president Hiranya Konwar said the party also demanded a judicial inquiry.
The party would also observe 'Black Day' for two days, beginning today.
Meanwhile, Mr Baishya, who was injured in the road accident, was being rushed to Guwahati in a critical condition.
He was on his way to call upon Mr Hazarika along with other party leaders and AGP chief Brindabon Goswami, who were following in another vehicle.
