R K Anand withdraws petition in SC in BMW case

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) Senior Advocate R K Anand, who is facing allegations of trying to win over a prosecution witness in BMW case to save his client, today withdrew his petition in the Supreme Court seeking a transfer of his case to a Delhi High Court bench in which Justice Manmohan Sareen is not sitting.

A Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat and Aftab Alam permitted counsel for Anand to withdraw his petition.

The apex court had earlier told the petitioner that it would not permit bench hunting by an accused.

Anand is facing contempt of court proceedings in the High Court before a division bench headed by Justice Manmohan Sareen.

Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of former Indian Navy chief S M Nanda, is the main accused in the case. Sanjeev had mowed down six people in 1999 while driving his BMW.

Anand, and another senior counsel I U Khan, who was removed from the case where he was appointed as special public prosecutor, were caught on camera during a sting operation carried out by a private TV news channel to win over Sunil Kulkarni who was the only eyewitness in the case.

Anand was shown offering money to Kulkarni on behalf of his client and found telling Kulkarni that he should demand Rs five crore from Nanda and 50 per cent of the money should be his share.

Khan was also found colluding with Anand. Both were facing allegations of interfering with the administration of justice.
