Purushothaman upsets top seed GM Negi in Asian junior chess

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) Third seeded IM Alavi Sayed Javad of Iran and fourth seeded IM Deep Sengupta of India are leading the field along with 9 other players on two points in the boys section after two days on a day which saw the top seed being upset in the Asian Junior Chess championship here today.

The Asian Junior Chess Championship sponsored by LIC and organised by Venus Chess Academy and conducted by Bombay Chess Association saw the top seed GM Parimarjan Negi upset by 18th seed Purushothaman T of India in a second round match in the boys section.

Playing with white pieces Purushothaman sacrificed d4 pawn in semi-slav defence to get rapid development of his pieces and got commanding position on the board after which Negi was forced to resign in 36 moves.

Rakesh Kulkarni of Thane who created a sensation yesterday in the first round by defeating 2nd seed Ashwin Jayaram of India continued his winning streak by defeating 16th seed Savarana Krishna.

In the girls section top seeded WIM Pourkashiyan Atousa of Iran was held by WIM Kritika Nadiq of India and 2 nd seeded WIM Kiran Monisha Mohanty was also held for draw by Padmini Rout of India.

Third seeded WIM Mary Ann Gomes along with WIM Soumya Swaminathan are leading the field with 2 points each followed by 6 players on 1.5 points.

Rousing reception to C'wealth Power Lifting Champion

Puducherry, Dec 14 (UNI) A rousing reception was accorded to K Masilamani(29), a fisherman youth from Vambakeerappalayam here, who bagged three gold medals and one silver medal in the Commonwealth Power Lifting Championship held in New Zealand recently. The villagers welcomed him with bands and fire works. Masilamani told newspersons that by bagging medals in 67.5 kg category lifting 640 kgs, he had brought laurels to Puducherry and the country as a whole. UNI.....

Warne to be highest paid cricketer in IPL

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sponsored Indian Premier League (IPL) will see the recently retired Australian spin legend Shane Warne drawing the highest fee with a staggering 400,000 dollar in his kitty. The BCCI managing committee announced the names of 34 cricketers including Warne, who have signed the contract and would be competing in next year's cricket league. Retired Aussie pacer Glenn McGrath and prolific middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf will earn 350,000 dollar.....

Former players criticise EB-Bagan for failure

Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) The former soccer players and coaches today blamed East Bengal and Mohun Bagan for their hopeless performance in the I-league. This year their start to the I-League has been all but auspicious. While East Bengal has lost two of their five matches, Bagan has lost three. East Bengal lost to Churchill Brother 2-3, while Dempo humbled Bagan 2-0. Talking to UNI, former Bagan coach and India international Biswajit Bhattacharjee said, '' Too much tinkering with coaches.....
