Punjab gears up to check sale of adulterated jaggery

Chandigarh, Dec 14 (UNI) The Punjab government has launched a special campaign to check the sale of adulterated jaggery being brought to Punjab from other states, State Health and Family Welfare Minister Luxmi Kanta Chawla today said. While checking the adulteration of milk, Khoya, Ghee and sweets, it has come to the government's notice that adulterated jaggery was being brought from other states and flooded in the markets of Punjab, Ms Chawla said.

"Such jaggery contains lot of harmful chemicals that are used to make it whiter. Even the base material being used for manufacturing of jaggery is not fit for human consumption,'' she added.

The Health Minister cautioned the traders that while purchasing jaggery being brought from other states, they should ensure that the concerned consignment has been passed by the Government Food Laboratory of Punjab.

Meanwhile, Director Health Dr Sukhdev Singh today issued instructions to all Civil Surgeons to conduct raids to check the sale of adulterated jaggery.

Rs 7,605 crore Draft Annual Plan for Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 14 (UNI) The Kerala Government today prepared a Draft Annual Plan worth Rs 7,605 crore for 2008-09, effecting a hike of Rs 655 crore as compared to the previous year. Talking to newspersons after attending a State Planning Board meeting, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said local bodies would get a sum of Rs 1,877 crore in the next financial year.
