Police Recruitment scam: UP govt directed to file affidavit

Allahabad, Dec 14 (UNI) The police recruitment case hearing took a new turn today, when Allahabad High Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit by December 19, disclosing the reasons for annulling the selection of over 22,000 IPS and other senior police officials.

The order was passed by Justice D P Singh, who also ordered the state government to get the affidavit filed by an official not below the rank of principal secretary.

The HC ordered the UP government to disclose the stage of the proceedings against the IPS officiers, who had been suspended in the police recruitment scam.

Hearing the case of suspended cops, the court futher directed the officers of the committee to file an affidavit on whose report the appointments were cancelled.

In a major decision on September 11, the Mayawati government had suspended 12 senior Indian Police Services(IPS) officers in the state for their involvement in police recruitment scam during the previous Mulayam Singh Yadav regime and annulled 14 recruitment boards, in which a total of 6504 civil police and PAC constables were recruited.

With this, the government had also cancelled the recruitments of 6,504 policemen selected by these boards. Later, several other cops were also suspended.

Of the 12, two officers Mukul Goel and Daljit Singh Choudhury were on central deputation. While Goel was on deputation with the ITBPF, Chaudhury was the personal secretery of a Union minister of state for Home.

Altogether over 22,000 policemen were recruited during the previous Samajwadi Party regime between the year 2004 and 2006 and several irregularities were detected during the probe conducted by the present Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government when it came to power in May last.
