Udaipur, Dec 14 (UNI) Planning commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Aluwalia said with the economy on a fast growing trajectory personal income of the people in the country is likely to double in the next ten years comapred to 40 to 50 years earlier.
Dr Aluwalia, speaking at the inauguration of the 22nd Engineering Congress here, said in the last five years the Gross Domestic Prodcution is growing at 8.5 per cent per year while income per individual has shown a growth of 7.5 per cent.
Comparing the income growth Dr Aluwalia said earlier doubling of the incme used to take about 40-50 years but in the present growth scenario this will take place in a decade.
He noted that technology was one of the major driving force behind this grwoth transformation technocrats and engineers have a major role to play in the groth of the country by keeping abreast with the latest in technology upfront.
Citing the example of farmers in Maharashtra using mobile and SMS for knowing the latest in weather and market rates forcasts, he said that the technology is coming handy in changing the life of the common people.
Dr Aluwalia streesed the need for maintaining quality along with extension of technical and engineering education in the country.
Speaking on the occassion Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar emphasised the need for an energy revolution by optium use of all the energy sources. He called for using fast breeding reactors and thorium based reactors as a solution to the energy demands of the country in future.
He said aotmic energy is pollution free and cost effective. For instance for generating 1000 MW of power from coal 3.8 lakh trucks of coal is to be burned while for a same capacity nuclear power plant 12 trucks of uranium is suiffent for a year.
Speaking on the occassion ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair said in space technology India is now at par with the western countries and now space technology is used for the welfare of the common man. He said telemedicine, ground water exploration using space technology and weather forecast as examples of the benefits of the technology to the common man. He said India is now part of six member countires constituing the space club.
