Pak polls have already been rigged: UN HR envoy

Washington, Dec 14: Special representative of UN Human Rights, Hina Jilani, has urged the US not to allow its observers to monitor the January 8 elections in Pakistan since the polls have already been rigged there.

In a Congressional briefing, Jilani said, "There is no point in monitoring the elections or watching the poll. The rigging has already happened." "Freedom of assembly is totally curtailed, freedom of expression is curtailed... Under these conditions, the election that is going to take place on January 8th has very little credibility," Jilani added.

Jilani, a prominent Pakistani attorney was asked by the lawmakers to give her opinion on the prospect of monitoring the polls in Pakistan.

"Under Pakistan's Constitution and the law, the judiciary oversees the elections.  A judiciary that lacks the confidence of the people and has no credibility, how do you think the elections are going to be credible?" she questioned the lawmakers.
