Mulayam to speak to Karat about his ''Third Front'' talk

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) Samajwadi Party Chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today said he would speak to the Communist Party of India(Marxist) over its fresh proposal for a ''Third Front'' as an alternative to the Congress and the BJP.

''I will have a talk with Mr Prakash Karat about it,'' he told UNI over phone from Lucknow when asked for his comment over the CPI-M General Secretary's statement about the creation of an alternative front, made in Sriganganagar today.

Mr Yadav is currently heading the United National Progressive Alliance(UNPA) which was formed as a ''Third Front'' comprising seven regional parties with the AIADMK as the leading one.

However, the Jayalalitha-led AIADMK has now virtually opted out of the Alliance, leaving the SP, Telugu Desam, Asom Gana Parishad, Indian National Lok Dal, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and National Conference in it.

''At this stage, it would be difficult for me to make any comment. I would first speak to Mr Karat to know the details,'' Mr Yadav said.

Mr Karat this morning said the Left parties were trying to form a ''Third Front'' as an alternative to both the Congress and the BJP's although he did not spell out a time frame.

''We have not yet set any time frame for the formulation of the Third Front, but efforts are on to forge an alternative based on a common programme and policies,'' said Mr Karat, who was here in connection with a state party convention.

He had said both the NDA and UPA followed the same economic policies which were adversely affecting the commonman.

''In such a situation, Left parties are left with no option but to search for an alternative to both the political fronts,'' he said.
