Lalu gets breather, eight punished in fodder scam

Ranchi, Dec 12 (UNI) The designated CBI court today delivered judgment on the remaining eight accused in multi-crore rupee fodder scam cases even as Railway Minister Lalu Prasad got a breather till January 7.

Jharkhand High Court passed the order in response to a writ petition, filed by Mr Prasad and three other accused - Dr K M Prasad, former Animal Husbandry Department officer, Vidya Sagar Nishad and Dr Rabindra Kumar Rana - both former Legislators.

Justice R R Prasad granted time because the lawyers of the High Court today abstained from work, protesting yesterday's incident in which Amit Dey, an advocate of the High Court, was mudered by some criminals near Hinoo area in the city.

This particular case was in connection with Dumka treasury, one of the multi-crore rupee fodder scam cases, unearthed in unified Bihar in 1990s.

In another judgement, the designated CBI court pronounced quantum of punishment to eight accused awarding six years of imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000 to seven while another one got three years of imprisonment and fine of Rs 50,000.

J K N Tiwari, CBI Judge Ranchi, passed the order after hearing the parties and awarded punishment to the accused.

The court further ordered that if there was any default in the payment of fine, the period of punishment would increase to more six months.

Yesterday, the court awarded quantum of punishment to another 23 accused in the same case.

On December 12, the designated CBI court awarded quantum of punishment to eight accused in the scam in which around Rs 27.33 crore were withdrawn during 1990-96 on the basis of forged documents from Ranchi treasury.

There were around 80 accused in the case of whom 64 were convicted and seven acquitted for lack of evidence.

While three of them became government approvers, four others had died during the trial of the case much earlier.

One of the accused was discharged in the beginning, while another pleaded guilty during the trial and later died.

Ultras gun down man, blow school building in Chatra

Chatra, Dec 14 (UNI) CPI(Maoist) gunned down one person and triggered explosion at a high school in Pandeypura village under Hunterganj police station area in this district of Jharkhand last night. Police today said the deceased, identified as Arvind Tiwary, was engaged in a programme organised at the school premises when the ultras shot him dead. Main reactor in Unkit-II of KNPP installed

Kudankulam, Dec 14 (UNI) The construction of the 1000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) has achieved a major milestone with the installation of the main reactor in Unit-II.
