High-level committee to revisit flood hit districts

Bangalore, Dec 14 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur today said that a high level committee would be set up to revisit the flood hit districts of Bagalkot, Gadag and Dharwad.

Talking to mediapersons, after a meeting with his advisors here, he said the committee, headed by his advisor P P Prabhu, would conduct a spot study of 198 villages affected by the flood in the last season and formulate rehabilitation and resettlement schemes. The decision to revisit the areas was taken after he met the Central study team yesterday.

The Central study team, which conducted a tour of the three districts yesterday, would submit its report in the next two weeks, he added.

He said the high level committee would submit its report in two weeks to the State Government and it would take up the work in January in these districts.

The State Government had already distributed more than Rs 170 crore as compensation, he said, adding that the meeting had also approved five drinking water projects and vegetable market, worth Rs 83 crore, in the State. The water supply projects would come up in Kadur, Sedam, Kushtagi, Somwarpet and Ramdurg, while the vegetable market would be developed in Mandya, he said.

On the unilateral decision by Karnataka Milk Federation to hike the price of milk, he said he was unhappy about it.

Veteran freedom fighter Shiv Kumar Mishra passes away

Kanpur, Dec 14 (UNI) Veteran freedom fighter Shiv Kumar Mishra, also the last member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army, died at his native town here. Patriot Chandrashekhar Azad had included Mishra in his Army, when he was only 16-year-old. He was greatly influenced with the ideologies of Shaheed-e-Anzam Bhagat Singh. Revolutionist Shiv Verma had later inculded him in Communist Party of India (CPI). In 1949, he became the CPI state unit secretary. Mishra had also penned down several popular.....

Salman urges separatist leaders to participate in elections

Srinagar, Dec 14 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid today urged separatist leaders to participate in the assembly elections as ''history has witnessed that separatist have not benefited by staying away from the polls.'' Talking to reporters here today, Mr Khurshid, former foreign secretary, said that separatists have not benefited by staying away from the polls. He said a democracy cannot flourish without the mass participation of people in the elections. Mr Khurshid said apprehensions about malpractices in the poll process.....

Congress comes out with hard disk data

Shimla, Dec 14 (UNI) Turning the tables on the BJP's poll plank of corruption ahead of the second phase of the state assembly elections, the Himachal Pradesh Congress today came out with details of the much talked about ''hard disk data'', allegedly containing the recommendations made by former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal while in office. State Animal Husbandry Minister Harsh Mahajan, who had opted out of the fray in these elections, released the details in a release here. The release.....
