Govt's attention drawn to plight of Tamils

Puducherry, Dec 14 (UNI) The French India Viduthalai Kaala Makkal Narppani Iyyakkam, a movement to protect the interests of people, who opted for Indian citizenship at the time of Puducherry's liberation from the French, today urged the Centre and state Government to pay attention to the plight of Tamils in Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

Addressing a press conference here today, Iyyakkam President D Shivaraj said the Centre and Puducherry administration should consider declaring November one as Puducherry's 'Independence Day'.

A memoranda in this regard would be sent to the President and Prime Minister, he added.

Mr Shivaraj demanded that there should not be any ''political colour'' to President Prathiba Patil's visit to the Union Territory on December 21 and the 'luxury expenses' relating to the visit should be avoided. He also urged the administration to declare December 21 as public holiday.

Pointing out the spurt in murder, burglary and bomb blasts here, he said the Lt Governor should order a CBI probe into these incidents.

Centre exempts donations to Santhigiri Ashram from IT

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Finance has granted Income Tax exemption to the Kerala-based Santhigiri Ashram for both social and scientific research, entailing the donors to get weighted deduction at the rate of 125 per cent on the amount donated without any ceiling. Such an exemption under Section 35 (1) (ii) and 35 (1) (iii) of the Income Tax Act is given to institutions engaged in research activities in social sciences and scientific research. Ernakulam Division tops in first premium collection

Kochi, Dec 14 (UNI) Ernakulam Division of Life Insurance Corporation retained the top spot in new business with a first premium collection of Rs 800 crore, among 105 divisions in the country. Talking to newspersons here today, LIC Senior Divisional Manager, J Anil Kumar said the Division had sold 3,67,239 policies during the current fiscal year. He said the Division had crossed 80.90 per cent of the targeted budget of Rs 955 crore in first premium and had set an ambitious.....

Metal prices down on thin buying support

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) Copper heavy, copper utensils, brass utensils, copper wire bars, zinc slab and Lead ingot in ferrous and non-ferrous categories fell further due to thin buying support on bearish advice from London Metal Exchange (LMR), Kolkata, Delhi, Indore and southern regions, traders at the Bombay Metal Exchange (BME) said. In the ferrous category (per quintal), copper heavy, copper utensils inched down by Rs 200 each. Brass utensils and brass cuttings drifted lower by Rs 200 and Rs 300.....
