Former SHO sent to CBI custody till December 22

Patiala, Dec 14 (UNI) A local court today sent former Station House Officer (SHO) Raman Kumar, allegedly involved in the Moga sex scandal, into CBI custody till December 22.

Raman Kumar had surrendered before Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), at Chandigarh, yesterday.

CBI brought him here to seek custodial remand to produce him in the CBI court here but as the CBI judge was on leave, the Bureau sought custody of Raman Kumar from District Sessions Judge.

Though CBI had sought 14 days custody, Sessions Judge Kuldeep Singh allowed only an eight-day remand.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had asked CBI to probe the case as names of political bigwigs and top police officials had figured in case's status reports. It also ordered Raman Kumar to surrender before CBI on December 12.

The names of Moga's former SSP, Davinder Singh Garcha, former education minister Tota Singh and his son Baljinder Singh have figured in the sex scandal proceedings.

The racket involves alleged extortion of money from ''innocent people'' by police officials in connivance with two women.

Parents lock school to protest teacher shortage

Puducherry, Dec 14 (UNI) To protest against the shortage of teachers in a government primary school, the parents today forcefully locked up the school at Narambai here today. The incident took place when the half-yearly examination was on at the school. The parents said the school had only two teachers and their wards were denied quality education. Rs 1 lakh compensation to families of building collapse victims

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh today announced compensation of Rs one lakh to the next of kin of victims of the building collapse in Borivali, north Mumbai. Five people died and 17 were injured in the incident. Soon after hearing of the tragedy, Mr Deshmukh reviewed the rescue and relief operations with authorities concerned and announced compensation of Rs one lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 10,000 to each of the injured......
