Efficient energy use can save 125 lakh units daily

Chandigarh, Dec 14 (UNI) Efficient energy use can save almost 125 lakh units of electricity daily in Haryana.

Construction and energisation of a new power generating project to produce this volume of electricity daily would cost Rs 2400 crore and about three years time, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary (Power) Ashok Lavasa said while stressing the need of energy conservation on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day here today.

He said the energy consumption in buildings constituted about 33 per cent of the total energy consumption. This consumption is expected to be equivalent to combined consumption of industries and transportation by 2050.

Hence, the government is formulating norms to promote the efficient use of energy in buildings.

As per the Electricity Act, 2003 the Government recommended energy conservation in commercial buildings. Further, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has released the Energy Efficiency Building Code, 2006 in order to comply with the Act.

He said a big part of power shortages could be met by implementing the energy conservation measures and without making any extra expenditure for which consumer awareness was the need of the hour.
