DMK meet will be a new dawn for youth: Stalin

Tirunelveli, Dec 14 (UNI) The DMK youth wing state conference, beginning here tomorrow, would signal a new dawn for the youth in the state, wing President and Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister M K Stalin said today.

In an interview to ''Kalaignar TV'' on the eve of the conference, Mr Stalin, who had been leading the wing for the past 27 years, said the conference would come out with resolutions, focussing on the development of the youth.

The conference would chalk out long-term programme for the development and progress of the youth, not only from the DMK, but from all parties.

''Resolutions for ushering in bright future, happiness and development of the youths in the state will be passed,'' Mr Stalin, son of Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi, said.

He said the conference was being organised, mainly to showcase the party's policies, programmes and ideologies. ''We never got a chance to organise a conference ever since the youth wing was formed in 1980 and when I suggested for an exclusive conference, party Chief (Mr M Karunanidhi) readily agreed,'' Mr Stalin said.

The youth wing used to steal the limelight in all the party conferences by taking out processions with army discipline and ''when we got a chance to organise a state conference, we wanted to seize the opportunity and make it a grand success,'' he said.

Initially, it was proposed to make it a one-day event, but after realising the enthusiasm shown by the cadres, it had been decided to make it a two-day event. Arrangements had been made to accommodate five lakh party cadres, but ''we expect the number to double,'' he said.

He said when he discussed with senior party leaders as to where the conference should be held, it was Mr Karunanidhi, who suggested that it should be held in Tirunelveli, a southern district of the state.

The southern part of the state was considered the stronghold of the Opposition AIADMK, but in the 2006 Assembly elections, the DMK had made considerable inroads into the AIADMK bastions.
