Shillong, Dec 14 (UNI) The Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government today formally launched its election campaign in the state, with the release of a booklet highlighting the 'achievements' made during its tenure.
The glossy eight-page booklet titled - 'Milestones - An achievement profile of the MDA government' - highlighted the achievements of the government in almost all sectors of the state.
Meghalaya is all set to go to Assembly polls early next year.
Chief Minister D D Lapang, who released the booklet, praised the coalition partners for the achievements and in the same vein also spoke about the 'difficulties' in running a coalition government.
None of the coalition partners were present during the declaration of the Lapang-led government report card at the secretariat conference hall.
The MDA government is supported by the United Democratic Party, Meghalaya Democratic Party, Hill State People's Democratic Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement Party, including Independent MLAs.
''In a coalition government, there are lots of hurdles,'' Mr Lapang said. However, the MDA government did manage to put aside these differences and worked for the benefit of the state, he asserted.
''Despite the differences in ideology and philosophy, the coalition partners did not stand in the way of development,'' Mr Lapang said.
The first page of the booklet highlighted the achievement of the coalition government for striking a tripartite agreement between the banned militant outfit A'chik National Council (ANVC) and Central and state governments.
''The government's efforts to contain militant activities received a boost when a total of 400 extremists were arrested and 237 surrendered during 2003-07,'' the milestone read, adding that ''170 surrendered militants had already been rehabilitated''.
The booklet further highlighted the raising of the two Indian Reserve battalions to help maintain law and order among other things.
About the earning revenue in the state, the booklet read that the Taxation Department had contributed Rs 625.81 crore to the state exchequer through collection of taxes under different Taxation Acts.
''The revenue collection of the department exceeded the Rs 100 crore mark for the first time during 2003-04, an increase of more than 100 per cent over the last three years,'' the booklet stated.
The booklet also mentioned about the government's achievements in framing Power and Information Technology policy, Roads, Food and Civil Supplies, Agriculture, Health and other departments.
