Chocolate is good for health and well-being: report

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) People can gain health and well-being benefits from the consumption of chocolate, says a report.

According to www.sciencedaily.com, a recent study has suggested that chocolate contains tryptophan, which is one of the building blocks the body uses to make Serotonin, a neurochemical that is associated with the sensation of pleasure in the brain. Eating chocolate may improve the way our brain works as the theobromine and phenylethylamine as well as the caffeine in chocolate increase alertness and mental performance.

Speaking to reporters here, Professor of Chocology and Cadbury Schweppes Global Science Director Paul Hebblethwaite said, ''We have all grown up enjoying chocolate as a favourite treat. Researchers are continually discovering ways in which chocolate can make us feel better whether it be lifting our mood or boosting antioxidant levels.'' According to ACNielsen Scantrack, Cocoa contains high levels of naturally occurring polyphenols that have antioxidant properties and works by fighting the free radicals, which attack cells causing disease and accelerate ageing. Dark chocolate contains high levels of polyphenols, which are good for the heart. Even hot chocolate contains higher concentrations of antioxidants than red wine or tea.

''Experts have even pointed out that chocolate is a blend of flavours and aromas so complex that food chemists have never been able to duplicate it in the lab,'' Prof Paul said.
