Centre grants Rs 112.65 cr to NE for flood control measures

Shillong, Dec 14 (UNI) The Centre has provided financial assistance of about Rs 112.65 crores to the North Eastern states for flood control measures during 2007-08, with Meghalaya's share being Rs 2.50 crores, an official statement said today.

The Centre provides technical support to the states through studies and maintains a network of flood forecasting stations. The statement said the assistance was also provided for flood management work in critical reaches, including bank erosion activities, under the Central schemes.

All NE states also received financial aid under the Calamity Relief Fund and the National Contingency Calamity Fund. Activities related to flood management were implemented by the state governments from their own resources, it stated.

The Centre,however, has not yet formulated a 'National Policy on Flood Control'. However, the issues related to flood management were addressed in the National Water Policy, 2002.

Centre exempts donations to Santhigiri Ashram from IT

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Finance has granted Income Tax exemption to the Kerala-based Santhigiri Ashram for both social and scientific research, entailing the donors to get weighted deduction at the rate of 125 per cent on the amount donated without any ceiling. Such an exemption under Section 35 (1) (ii) and 35 (1) (iii) of the Income Tax Act is given to institutions engaged in research activities in social sciences and scientific research.
