Centre exempts donations to Santhigiri Ashram from IT

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Finance has granted Income Tax exemption to the Kerala-based Santhigiri Ashram for both social and scientific research, entailing the donors to get weighted deduction at the rate of 125 per cent on the amount donated without any ceiling.

Such an exemption under Section 35 (1) (ii) and 35 (1) (iii) of the Income Tax Act is given to institutions engaged in research activities in social sciences and scientific research.

''The IT exemption is a recognition of the Santhigiri Ashram as an organisation for conducting Scientific, Industrial and Social Reserarch,'' Ashram Director Swami Gururethnam Jnana Thapaswi said in a statement here today.

The Ashram, located at Thiruvananthapuram, had been conducting social research (in spirituality) and Industrial research (in medical science) at Santhigiri Social Research and Institute and Santhigiri Scientific and Industrial Research Institute respectively.

The Santhigiri Social Research Institute has facilities for students from India and abroad who are interested in doing research in spirituality in general and ideals of Navajothisree Karunakara Guru, the founder of the Ashram.

''The Guru has rediscovered the concepts practised by the ancient Rishis and has put them into practice through the lives of thousands of devotees,'' the release said.

The Santhigiri Scientific and Industrial Reserach Institute conducts research on Indian systems of medicine-Ayurveda and Siddha.

The Institute is functioning at the ancestral property of former President K R Narayanan at Uzhavoor in Kerala.

Praj Industries join ICRISAT's sweet sorghum ethanol consortium

Hyderabad, Dec 14 (UNI) The Pune-based Praj Industries has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Hyderabad-based International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to become a members of its Sweet Sorghum Ethanol Research Consortium (SSERC). ICRISAT Director General William Dar and Praj Industries CEO and Managing Director Shashank Inamdar signed the agreement on December 10 here. In a statement, Dr Dar said the partnership will go a long way in enhancing the commercialisation of sweet sorghum for bioethanol.....

Reliance energy okays raising of $1.3 bn abroad

Mumbai Dec 14: Anil Ambani promoted power producing company, Reliance Energy Ltd today said that its board had approved raising upto Rs 5,000 crore ($1.3 billion) by way of foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCB) overseas. The company informed the Bombay Stock exchange that the board of directors of the company considered the proposal on December 12 and gave it a go ahead. Earlier this month, the company said the FCCBs would be issued at a premium to the prevailing market.....

9 policemen sentenced to 3 years' RI for custodial death

Nagpur, Dec 14 (UNI) The High Court here has convicted nine policemen for the custodial death in 1993 of a person arrested on mistaken identity, and sentenced them to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) each, while acquitting the tenth accused policemen for lack of evidence. Hearing an appeal from the state against the lower court's ruling, a Division Bench consisting of Justice Kishore Rohee and Justice R C Chavan at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court yesterday reduced.....
