CA wants to shorten Australia's next Indian tour from 4 to 3 test

Sydney, Dec 14 (UNI) Cricket Australia (CA) has made a proposal to the BCCI to shorten their Test series against India next year from four to three matches so as to accomodate a crammed schedule.

India are touring Down Under from December 20 to early March next year for a four-Tests series and a tri-series also involving Sri Lanka.

Australia will pay a return visit to India in October next year and CA wants that tour to be shortened from four to three Tests, besides two ODIs, so that the world chmapions return in time to play against New Zealand in November.

''That (shortening the tour) is a discussion we are having with India at the moment,'' a CA spokesman said.

''They (BCCI) are examining our proposal to play three Tests and two one-day matches. We are keen to get back to Australia by November 1 as we have a three-Test series against New Zealand,'' the spokesman was quoted as saying The Australians plan to travel to India immediately after the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September next year.

On early tours of India till 1986-87, Australia usually played five-Test series and occasionally six, but that year they moved to three Tests and continued till 2001. Since 2001, the two countries are having four-Tests tours.

Not just against India, Australia have also reduced the number of Tests against the West Indies also.

Australia had always played five Tests in the West Indies up until 1994-95, when it was reduced to four.

Next year the two teams will play three Tests in the Caribbean, five one-day internationals and the West Indies' first international Twenty20 in May-June.

CA is also trying to move away from the triangular format to ease player workload and its reciprocal duties.

Australia often finds itself in a position of having to make up reciprocal one-day matches with countries that compete in the extended tri-nations series.
