Ballia bypoll: 4 nominations withdrawn

Ballia, Dec 14 (UNI) Four candidates today withdrew nomination for bypoll to Ballia Lok Sabha constituency on December 29.

The seat fell vacant after the death of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar.

Today was the last date to withdraw nominations. Now, 16 candidates, including Chandrashekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar, are in the fray, Assistant Returning Officer Dr S N Singh said.

He informed 714 polling stations and 1,414 polling booths would be established for the December 29 election, in which 15,17,650 voters would exercise their franchise.

The electorate comprise of 8,32,467 men, and 6,85,251 women.

The counting of votes will be taken up on January 2.

Shillong, Dec 14 (UNI) A Fast Track Court in Meghalaya has sentenced a man to ten years rigorous imprisonment for raping a seven-year-old girl last year. Additional District and Sessions Judge B Giri awarded the punishment to Bawanaibor Dkhar alias Mama No yesterday for sexually assaulting a minor girl on May 6 last year at the latter's residence. SC directs CMDA not to regularize unauthorised constructions

New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority not to regularize any unauthorised construction in the city till further orders. New Delhi, Dec 14 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today disposed of a petition in relation to a channel that had carried out a sting involving school teacher Uma Khurana, which later turned out to be fake, and laid down guidelines for the media.
