Abundant opportunity for manufacturing cos in IT

Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology(MAIT) Executive Director Vinnie Mehta today said there were abundant opportunities for manufacturing companies to develop in West Bengal following recent growth in the state's IT sector.

Hoping certain policies would be amended by the government to make room for reduction of cost of production and sale of computer and other related products, Mr Mehta said, '' Presently, certain proposals are under consideration by the government, which if implemented will bring down the selling price of computer hardware and software products by 15 per cent. '' '' Considering the entire value chain till the end customers, we are concentating more on eco-system approach, since all the sections of consumers need to be taken into account, '' he said and added, '' Offsetting of taxes will enable reduction of prices of computer and related hardware products in the state. '' Without divulging the names of the companies, Mr Mehta maintained that major corporates had shown interest in investing in manufacturing companies, particularly with the government expressing intention of providing 25 per cent subsidy for space required for the purpose.

'' If excise duty and service taxes become reversible, the prices can come down to a large extent, '' he reiterated.

Speaking about the TRAI's recommendations regarding regulation of wired and unwired broadband connections, Mr Mehta said, '' We totally support TRAI's attempt and we feel that there must be a value preposition in this matter. '' '' With one billion population in India using internet connection, only 2.5 million people use broadband connection, '' he said and added that this number needed to be increased and there was ample scope in this regard for the development of manufacturing units for extensive production of telecommunication and related products.

Campaigning for final phase of elections comes to an end

Ahmedabad, Dec 14 (UNI) Campaigning for the second and final phase of Gujarat Assembly elections, which saw political leaders indulging in high drama and mudslinging, drew to a close this evening. Polling for the remaining 95 constituencies of Central and North Gujarat will be held on December 16. The BJP seems to be in a strong footing in these two regions, having won 73 of the 95 seats at the last hustings. Incidentally, these areas had been also the most affected.....

Polling for the remaining 95 constituencies of Central and North Gujarat will be held on December 16. The first phase of polling to 87 seats had taken place on Tuesday. 34 school children fall ill after consuming milk

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) Thirty-four children from the city-based Chabildas Bai School were admitted to the KEM Hospital after they complained of vomiting and nausea following consumption of milk provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Civic officials said the children from the Chabildas Bai Municipal Secondary School in Dadar complained of vomiting and abdominal pain after consuming the scented milk given to them after their mid-day meals. BMC Commissioner Jairaj Phatak, while speaking to reporters, said, ''More than 100 children.....
