37 MNS activists detained, later released

Nagpur, Dec 14 (UNI) Police detained 37 activists of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) after they locked the two entry gates of office of the Zilla Parishad (ZP) in Buldhana today, demanding action against an official for alleged irregularities in the appointment of staff.

According to police, the activists put locks on both the gates this morning and picketed the entry points, alleging that there had been irregularities in the recent recruitment of 'Angwanwadi Sevikas' of the body. They were also demanding action against a senior official of the ZP for the alleged irregularities, police said.

The picketing continued for nearly two hours before ZP chief Prakash Patil and other office bearers intervened and persuaded the activists to open the locks, police said.

The activists, who were later released, were assured at a meeting this evening that suitable action would be initiated in the matter.

RCF, Vikram Pillay Academy enter semis

Pune, Dec 14 (UNI) Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF), Mumbai, posted a 3-0 win over Central Railway, Pune, and breezed into the last four stage in the Dr Avinash Bhide memorial state level hockey tournament today here. RCF will now lock horns with defending champions Maharashtra Krida Mandal, Kolhapur, in the semi-finals, while Vikram Pillay Academy will take on Pune City Police in the other semi-finals tomorrow. In the other quarterfinal tie, Vikram Pillay Academy thrashed lowly Satara District XI.....

Purushothaman upsets top seed GM Negi in Asian junior chess

Mumbai, Dec 14 (UNI) Third seeded IM Alavi Sayed Javad of Iran and fourth seeded IM Deep Sengupta of India are leading the field along with 9 other players on two points in the boys section after two days on a day which saw the top seed being upset in the Asian Junior Chess championship here today. The Asian Junior Chess Championship sponsored by LIC and organised by Venus Chess Academy and conducted by Bombay Chess Association saw the top seed.....

Karan, Rushmi top seeds in National Grasscourt Championships

Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) In the absence of the big guns, Karan Rastogi and Rushmi Chakravorthi will be top seeds in this year's National Grass courts Championships with a purse of Rs 4.5 lakhs to be played at the South Club from December 15 to 22. The main draw of the singles will be of 32, while the doubles will be of 16. While there will be 20 direct entries in the singles, there will be four wild cards and eight.....
