Nine cops with just 1 service revolver against AK-47 rifles

Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh, Dec 13 (UNI) In a shocking disclosure, Chhattisgarh Police sources revealed here today that just a single service revolver was available with personnel at a police station, in Bastar district, that was attacked yesterday and three policemen killed by Maoists bearing AK-47 assault rifles.

Vishrampuri Police Station earlier had the status of a police post. Sources quoted constables as saying that a few weapons had been supplied but were later taken back.

Confirming that the personnel were not adequately equipped, Inspector-General (Bastar Range) R K Vij said, ''nine personnel -- including a sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector (ASI) -- were posted at the station. The naxals came with the motive of looting weapons.'' Prior to the attack, the rebels severed power supply to surrounding villages. Explosives and small arms fire were used to target the station leading to the death of ASI Shobharam Sahu, head constables Shivram Sharma and Murli Tiwari. A Maruti van and several motorbikes were charred. Constable Badinath Sori sustained a gunshot wound and his wireless set was looted.

The sole weapon that the ultras could loot was Mr Sahu's service revolver.
