Polio resurface in K'taka

Bangalore, Dec 5: Health officials have launched an intense immunisation programme here and in Ramanagar district following detection of a Polio case.

This is for the first time that a polio case was detected after a gap of three years. In 2003, polio cases were detected in Bellary district and the state had been declared polio-free since 2004.

In the wake of the latest case, the state government has launched a Special Immunisation programme in association with the Rotary International on December 9 in the two places.

A two-year-old boy of a nomadic tribal family from Uttar Pradesh was diagnosed to be afflicted with 'P3 wild polio virus.' The case came to light on November 29 when the child identified as Zeeshan, was hospitalised here following a fever. The child was suspected to have contacted the disease at his birthplace in Faizabad district of UP. His two legs had been paralysed, health officials said.

The family, which lived in a slum near Yashwantpur, had since left the place.

''We have taken up oral immunisation in the slum in Yaswantpur where 64 families with 78 children reside. These children had not been covered earlier under the immunisation programme. The victim's stool had been sent to the National Institute of Virology in the city,'' Narayana Holla, Surveillance Medical Officer, National Polio Surveillance Project under World Health Organisation (WHO) said.
