Journalists, NGOs protest HR violation in Pak


New Delhi, Nov 15: Condemning large scale violation and abuse of power by the Pakistan government, several human rights activists, journalists and NGOs today held a protest demonstration at Mandi House here, demanding restoration of democracy and human rights of the people in the neighbouring country.

The protest held to mark the 'International Day of action in Pakistan' and the 'International Federation of Journalists Day of Action', was held under the aegis of Amnesty International and participated by several known faces including columnist Praful Bidwai.

Demonstrators, while condemning imposition of emergency in Pakistan demanded restoration of fundamental rights, release of prisoners, reinstating independent judiciary and dismantling of military tribunal for civilians.

Terming the current state of emergency as a blatant breach of international law, the activists also called on the United Nations to despatch urgently a mission to Pakistan on a fact finding mission to investigate human rights abuse there and the condition of detainees.

INSA, a conglomeration of NGOs, Centre for World Disarmament and Peace, International Federation of Journalists and NGO Safar were among those who participated in the demonstration.
