Puducherry, Nov 13: Puducherry agriculture minister V Vaithilingam today honoured Maheswari, the local girl who won three gold and three bronze medals in weightlifting in the recently concluded Asian indoor games in Jordan.
Talking to newspersons on the occasion Mr Vaithilingam said as per the government scheme, a cash award of Rs 20 lakhs would be provided to those who win gold medal in international competetion.
Maheswari was the first sportsperson to avail it.
Mr Vaithilingam said Maheswari, hailing from Kariyamanickam in his Nettapakkam constituency and a plus-one student of the Kamban government higher secondary school, would also be provided with Rs two lakhs from the Corporations under his departments, apart from the Rs 20 lakhs.
He also appealed to sports promoters to introduce Maheswari to advertisements.
Education minister M O H F Shajahan was also present on the occassion.
