Brand Bengal hit; Wipro logs out, Mahindra shifts

Kolkata, Nov 12: Brand Bengal is feeling the heat of strife-torn Nandigram with two of the IT majors either closing or shifting its operations in the face of today's Opposition-sponsored 24-hour bandh.

The 24-hour bandh was called by all the Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, Congress, BJP and SUCI, protesting the escalating violence in Nandigram.

For the first time after Sector V in Salt Lake logged on to the IT revolution in the state, Wipro had logged out for the day and Tech Mahindra had decided to shift its BPO operations for the next 48 hours to Noida.

West Bengal Principal Secretary, IT, Siddharth said, '' There is a mixed response to the bandh in the IT sector. Some of the offices are non-functional, while some are functioning properly. We are still collecting the details. '' With Mr Siddharth admitting that bandh had partially affected the IT Sector for the first time, the Brand Bengal image had taken a beating.
