Artists, writers call for restoration of democracy in Pakistan

New Delhi, Nov 6: Several artists, writers and poets have called for immediate restoration of democracy in Pakistan. In a statement here, they urged the Pakistan government to free all detainees, particularly human rights activist Asma Jehangir and Salima Hashmi, daughter of Faiz Ahmad Faiz and wife of Shoaib Hashmi, who were rounded up after the imposition of emergency in the Islamic nation on Saturday.

''It is a matter of concern that an artist of the stature of Salima Hashmi has been arrested in the crackdown...By no stretch of imagination can the name of Hashmi can be said to be linked with either terrorist or fundamental forces,'' the statement added.

Actor M K Raina, art critic and writer Suneet Chopra, Poet Vishnu Nagar, Historian Nalini Taneja and Journalist Rajendra Prasad were prominent among those who signed the statement.
