Allies against mid-term poll, says CPI

Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh), Nov 5: Communist Party of India General Secretary A B Bardhan today said any haste in implementing the Indo-US nuclear deal before concluding the talks would lead to mid-term elections, but it depended on the UPA Government.

''Neither the left parties nor other parties supporting the UPA government wanted mid-term elections. Nobody talked about mid-term poll on the issue of the nuclear deal'', he told to the sources.

The sixth meeting of the UPA-Left committee on nuclear agreement would meet on November 16, Mr Bardhan said, adding there was no need for distress as talks were in progress and some solution would come out of it.

The CPI leader said the United States wanted to go by its time-table, but our time-table quite varied. Solution to the vexed issue would take time, he added.

Mr Bardhan alleged that the UPA had done nothing concrete for the upliftment of tribals. Though the legislation to grant right to the forest dwellers had been enacted, but no rules for its implementation had been framed so far. The government had succumbed to pressure from wildlife and environalist lobby, he added.
