IT industry shocked over BPO girl murder

New Delhi, Nov 3: The IT industry has expressed shock and dismay over the murder of a 22-year-old Wipro employee in Pune and has called for greater safety and security for all the concerned authorities to take every possible measure to eliminate such crime.

''There has been a criminal manipulation of our processes.

In the past couple of years, we had put down several process in place including 'no first pick up or last drop' of female employees, compulsory rosters for every cab, ongoing education of all employees on personal safety and precautions to be followed during late night travel etc,'' Wipro BPO President T K Kurien said in a statement.

Unfortunately, even the most secure of processes do get manipulated and we are deeply disturbed by what has happened, he added.

''We have initiated an immediate effort to audit and further tighten all our processes, especially concerning the safety of our employees and this will be personally reviewed by me going forward,'' Mr Kurien said.

IT industry body Nasscom said the gruesome murder reflects the need for greater safety and security and for all concerned to take every possible measure to eliminate such crime.

''Such incidents set back efforts that are being made to bring about greater gender equality in the country's workforce,'' it added.

The industry has taken many steps keeping in mind that a large number of staff in the industry are women, and that the nature of work requires many employees - men and women - to work at night, Nasscom said.

''We are aware that warped, criminal minds will try to find ways of circumventing the protection and procedures already in place, and therefore, there is need to constantly devise 'better practices'.

Accordingly, any insights and learning that may arise from the investigation into this incident will also be incorporated in these guidelines,'' it added.

The girl was murdered two days ago when she took an office cab.

Her body was found on Friday night and her head had been smashed with a stone.

The driver, Purushottam Borate and his accomplice Pradip Khopde have been arrested and had confessed to have murdered the girl.

The body of the girl, who is yet to be identified, was recovered from a paddy field at Gaunje village near Talegaon.
