Violence in parts of Amritsar after killing of youth

Amritsar, Oct 26 (UNI) Violence erupted in parts of this holy city today as news spread about a youth being shot dead in Valmiki-dominated Lahori Gate area, by some car-borne people following an altercation last night .

Angry mobs damaged and looted 50-odd shops and scores of vehicles in Hall Bazar, Katra Jaimal Singh, Hathi Gate any other localities under police station D-Division area.

SP City, Dr Kaustubh Sharma, who visited the affected area said police force has been deployed in the affected localities and the situation, though tense, was under control.

Meanwhile, Police has registered a case against Harjinder Singh, alias Bonny Hill, a close relative of the sitting Akali MLA in the the killing of the youth, identified as Shankar Dass.

Police said the incident occurred around 0100 hours when a group of people stopped the car, leading to the altercation.

Congress activists led by former Deputy Speaker Darbari Lal, former Parliamentary Secretary Dr Rajkumar, ex-MLA Harjinder Singh and many other leaders staged a 'dharna' outside D-Div area police station, demanding arrest of the accused.

Dr Rajkumar has also issued an apeeal to people to maintain peace and harmony, specially in view of the day being the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Balmiki, who stood for high moral values.

EC displeased with VC, Pro VC of Saurashtra varsity

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has conveyed its displeasure for the violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by Vice Chancellor Kamlesh Joshipura and Pro Vice Chancellor Kaplak Trivedi of Saurashtra University. According to EC sources, the Commission has also directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to file a case against them under section 127 of the Representation of Peoples Act against printers and publisher of pamplets. The EC has also issued notice against BJP MLA Pradeep.....

''Gafla'' selected for Indian Panorama at IFFI, Goa 2007

Mumbai, Oct 26 (UNI) ''Gafla'', a Sameer Hanchate film, inspired by the stock market scam of 1992, has been officially selected for the Indian Panorama of the 38th International Film Festival of India, Goa to be held from November 23 to December 3, 2007. Only two Hindi films have made it to the Panorama with the other one being Bhavna Talwar's ''Dharam'' of the total 21 feature films, selected for the festival. Politicians hold the key to introduce sex education-experts

Luckow, Oct 26 (UNI) Sex education is still a taboo in the Indian society and it was up to the politicians to pave way to adopt a consensus to introduce sex education in schools.
