Urdu scholars to discuss Mir's poetry

Imphal, Oct 26 (UNI) A three-day seminar on the impact of Mir Taqi Mir on Urdu Poetry began here today.

Dr Purandeswari, Union Minister of State for Higher Education, inaugurated the seminar at the first Manipur Rifles. It is being attended by over 200 delegates from all over the country.

The literary and cultural organisations of Manipur organised the seminar under the aegis of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu language.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Purandeswari said Urdu is a vibrant language and had been included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

''It is still widely spoken and officially used in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and other places,'' she said.

There are about 2900 Urdu newspapers in the country, she said.

''It is the language of the masses and it would be wrong to associate it with only literature, Ghazal and poetry,'' she explained.

The union government was paying emphasis to the development of the language.

She said Mir Taqi Mir (1723-1810) was a great Urdu poet who wrote during the formative stage of the language itself. There is a debate whether Mir was better than Mirza Ghalib. She also recited a couplet written by Mirza Ghalib in which he had praised Mir as a great poet.

Mr. L Jayenta, state education minister said the government would consider the proposal of various Urdu speaking people of Manipur to appoint Urdu teachers and establishment of Urdu Academy in Manipur.

Dr. Ali Javed, Director of National Council for Promotion of Urdu language said people were surprised when Manipur was selected as the venue of the national level seminar on Urdu. But its a fact that Manipur has a large number of Urdu speaking population and its vibrant and secular society made it easier to organise the seminar here.

The seminar would discuss 'Mir Today', 'Heritage of Mir', 'Mir's vocabulary and style', 'experience of life and experience of love' among others.
