UP powermen call off strike to protest Lanco takeover of Anpara C

Lucknow, Oct 26 (UNI) In a major respite to the Mayawati government, power employees in Uttar Pradesh backed off from an indefinite strike to protest the handing over of Anpara C power project to Andhra-based Lanco Kondapalli company.

The company would take over the site tomorrow and begin the work to set up a two 500 mw thermal units by 2011, the state government announced today.

Addressing the media here, Principal Secretary (Home) J N Chamber, Principal Secretary (Power) V N Garg and UP Power Corporation Ltd Chairman G B Pattanaik said the powermen from 12 unions which had formed a 'sangharsh samiti' have agreed to the appeal of Chief Minister Mayawati to call off the strike proposed from tomorrow.

The strike was to initially begin at Anpara C, and later spread to other power generating units.

''Though the agreement is not based on any pre-conditions, the government has made it clear that there would be no retrenchments,'' said Mr Pattanaik. He claimed that besides Anpara C, the Anpara D power project is expected to commencde generation by 2011.

''The Anpara D project would be in te public sector and we have already signed an agreement with PSU major BHEL to provide it with boilers, turbines and generators,'' the UPPCL chairman added.

The press conference was initially called to announce steps being taken to handle the proposed strike.

The state government impressed upon the 'sangharsh samiti' that private investment was required to boost the sagging power generation in the state. The state government plans to generate 10,000 mw of power in the next five years. The Sonebhadra-based Anpara C project is likely to play a crucial role in the plans as its generation would be utilised fully by UP.

Meanwhile, the state government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Mr G B Pattaniak to look into any disputes arising out of sharing of common facilities between Anpara A, B and C power projects.
