TNHCPA urges Govt to include Banana in noon-meal scheme

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 26 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Horticulture Crops Producers Association(TNHCPA) today urged the State Government to include 'Banana' as a menu in the noon-meal scheme to improve the health of the school children, as the fruit contains nutritious value.

In a memorandum addressed to the State Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam with a copy to the press here, Association's State President Puliyur A Nagarajan lauded the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for ensuring the addition of egg in the noon-meal scheme, urged him to include Banana, too, in the menu.

This would assist the growth of children and the growers of the fruit, he added.

Mr Nagarajan said the Government should impart scientific training to horticultural farmers and facilitate the process for them to undergo further training in other parts of the country and abroad. He also urged Mr Karunanidhi to make use of his good offices with the Centre to ensure the establishment of export zone for banana and floriculture products here soon.

Thailand to make dictionary for blind

Bangkok, Oct 26 (UNI) A special dictionary named 'Daisy' for the visually-impaired people will be ready in the next two years. DAISY -- Digitally Accessible Information System -- is a joint attempt by Thailand's Royal Institute, the Thai Blind People's Foundation and the Club of Volunteers for the Blind. Volunteers read books and record their voices in digital format which becomes accessible as information to the visually-impaired people. Being graduate may not be mandatory to contest polls in Pakistan

Islamabad, Oct 26 (UNI) Being a graduate may not remain a mandatory condition to contest elections in Pakistan. The condition was among the key points discussed between the government and the Pakistan People's Party at a recent meeting and it could be rescinded. ''The government has initially expressed its willingness to end the graduation condition because it is one of the major demands of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto,'' The News quoted sources as saying. Undergraduates were barred from contesting the election.....

London, Oct 26 (UNI) Loss of habitat, hunting and threats, exacerbated by climate change will bring about the extinction of a primate species, mankind's closest relatives, in more than a century, according to the latest evaluation of the threat posed to the continued existence of monkeys and apes around the world. The endangered list includes the Western Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) found in India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. One species of monkey that has not been seen for many years.....
