Rupee ends stronger by 10 paise against USD

Mumbai, Oct 26 (UNI) The Rupee today ended stronger by 10 paise against the American greenback, at 39.45/46 per dollar as compared to its previous close of 39.55/56 per dollar, tracking the Sensex's firm move over 19K.

The partially convertible Indian currency started marginally weaker at 39.60/61 per dollar and further tracking the rise of stock markets, it hit the week-high of 39.41 per dollar during the day trade, dealers said.

''The local unit was at gain for the fourth straight day and it is expected that Rupee will further appreciate against the US dollar, touching the level of 39.00 per dollar in the next week,'' a senior dealer with a leading private bank opined.

Asia's best performing currency has gained more than 0.6 per cent this week to 39.45 against the dollar, he added.

The six-month forward premium closed firm at 1.21 (0.94) per cent, while annualised premium also ended at 1.11 (0.85) per cent.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today fixed the reference rate at Rs 39.51 per US Dollar. The reference rate was up by three paise as compared to yesterday's rate of Rs 39.54 per USD.

The rupee ended weaker against other major world currencies today.

The Rupee against Euro ended weaker at 56.74 (56.29) per unit.

Against Pound Sterling, it closed low at 80.93 (80.68) per unit, while against Japanese Yen, the rupee was low at 34.56 (34.38) per hundred units.

Washington, Oct 26 (UNI) Several business houses in America are conducting help-programmes to encourage their workers to stop smoking in order to reduce their medical bills. A recent survey indicated that one-third of companies with at least 200 workers offered smoking cessation as part of their employee benefits package.
