Rate contract good for water supply: Srivastav

Mumbai, Oct 26 (UNI) Additional Municipal Commissioner Manu Kumar Srivastav today said that the corporation is working towards improving water supply in the city and has not privatised the water pipeline maintenance department.

Speaking to reporters today, Mr Srivastav clarified his stand and said that the corporation has started the rate contract to give more strength to its staff and the contractor cannot do anything independently.

The Standing committee of the BMC had cleared a proposal to appoint six contractors for each of the zones for maintaining and repairing the water pipes this week. He added that the contract is a three year process and will be discontinued after that once the pipelines have improved.

''We have so far spent around Rs 173 crore for water supply in the city in the last ten years out of which Rs 140 crore was spent on salaries,'' said Mr Srivastav. He further added that the new system will improve water supply and has been created from inputs of the leak detection squad.
