Paddy crops submerged in Delta region due to heavy rain

Thanjavur, Oct 26 (UNI) Paddy crops in more tha one lakh acres were submerged today due to water logging as heavy rain continued to lash the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.

The rain in the delta region was causing anxiety to farmers as transplantation of Samba and Thaladi paddy crops were already covered in most of the agricultural areas.

PWD sources said following heavy rain, breach in Pudumanniar river at Sirkali caused damages to paddy crops as rain water entered in more than 15 villages in the nearby areas.

In view of the heavy rain, discharge of water had been stopped from the Grand Anaicut to Cauvery and Venar rivers to facilitate the draining of water from the fields, they added.

Tirupoondi recorded the highest rainfall of 73 mm, followed by Nannilam 60 mm, Nagapattinam 50 mm, Sirkali and Tiruvarur, 47 mm each.

America aims having smoke-free workers to save medical bills

Washington, Oct 26 (UNI) Several business houses in America are conducting help-programmes to encourage their workers to stop smoking in order to reduce their medical bills. A recent survey indicated that one-third of companies with at least 200 workers offered smoking cessation as part of their employee benefits package. CBI seeks SC orders against Mulayam Singh and family

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The CBI today informed the Supreme Court that the preliminary inquiry against former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members, in the disproportionate assets case, is complete. The CBI filed an application, informing the apex court that the preliminary inquiry against Mulayam Singh, his two sons Akhilesh Yadav, a sitting member of the Lok Sabha, and Prateek Yadav and his daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav is complete, it wants to place the status report.....
