NRI groom, parents held for dowry demand

Patiala, Oct 26 (UNI) An NRI bridegroom and his parents were arrested on the charges of demanding dowry and breach of trust by the police here today.

According to Mandeep Singh Sidhu SP City, the NRI bridegroom Gurpreet Singh, his father Bhajan Singh and his mother Harjit Kaur were arrested as they had demanded 50 lakh from Gurbachan Singh, father of bride Amitoj Kaur here today.

The Civil Lines Police station has registered the case under sections 406, 498-A of IPC and Dowry Act.

The bridegroom is a doctor in New York and the bride is also an MBBS doctor.

Mr Sidhu said that before proceeding to Gurduwara for the 'Anand Karaj' (marriage), Bhajan Singh demanded Rs 50 lakh from father of Amitoj Kaur, who sought time as the amount was large.

However, Bhajan Singh threatened that the 'Anand Karaj' will be performed only after they received the full amount.

When the news reached the bride Amitoj Kaur, she refused to marry Gurpreet Singh.

Following this agitated baratis began abusing the bride's family members. Some of bride's relative lost patience and started beating up the bridegroom and his father.

The police immediately reached on the spot and arrested Gurpreet Singh and his father Bhajan Singh. His mother Harjit Kaur was also arrested.

Sanctions could harm Iran ties with UN nuclear body

TEHRAN, Oct 26 (Reuters) New US sanctions could push Tehran to rethink its cooperation with the United Nations atomic watchdog, Iran's former chief nuclear negotiator said today.
