Meghalaya sets new world record on guitar ensemble

Shillong, Oct 26 (UNI) Meghalaya today set a world record for the largest guitar ensemble with a performance here by guitarists from across the North Eastern states.

However, there is a visible threat to this as Londoners too have decided to make a similar attempt on November 2 under the aegis of the Guitar Trade Fair.

A new Guinness World Record was created with 1,730 guitarists strumming Bob Dylan's classic number 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' for more than five minutes in perfect rhythm.

The previous Guinness world record - 1,721 guitarists - for the largest ensemble performance of Deep Purple's ''Smoke on the Water,'' was set in June 3, 2007 at Kansas City in the US.

Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum Chairman Robert G Lyngdoh announced that ''Meghalaya has once again broken the world record by the 1,730 guitar ensemble which played for a continuous five minutes in perfect rhythm.'' ''We are delighted to break another record and hope to do so again next year,'' Mr Lyngdoh said.

However, Mr Lyngdoh said the formal announcement of today's world's largest guitar ensemble would be officially declared by the Guinness Book of World Records on receipt of the full report from the judges officially nominated.

The Judges were - Meghalaya Director General of Police Bijon Dey Sawian and renowned Indian Music scholar Ms Lapynshai Syiem.

Last autumn, Meghalaya created a new world record for the largest drum ensemble- 7,951 drummers-, irrespective of age and skill surpassed the record of Po Leung Kuk - a charity organisation in Hong Kong helping orphaned children - which assembled 7,727 drummers.

Today's world record-breaking guitar ensemble also drew guitarists from all the seven sister states of the North East.

''It's awesome. I have never seen young and old guitarists strumming chords in time together,'' said Supak, who came all the way from Thailand to witness the largest guitar ensemble in history.

The guitar ensemble also heralds the month-long annual Autumn Festival, which is aimed at projecting Meghalaya and its other seven sister states to the world community, as a region which can boast of positive and constructive ideas.

The largest guitar ensemble will be followed by ''Festival of Rock: Shillong'', wherein the voice of former international rock band 'Mr Big'' Eric Matrin would perform live for the first time in India on October 27.
