Mayawati demands CBI probe into Gujarat riots after expose

Lucknow, Oct 26: Taking serious cognizance of the 'Tehelka' expose on the 2002 Gujarat riots, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today reviled the role of the BJP and its associate organisations, and urged the Centre to order a CBI probe.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ms Mayawati demanded a CBI probe into the Gujarat riots in the light of new facts brought forward by 'Tehelka' in a sting operation expose.

Condemning the 'cruel' politics of the BJP and its organisations, she said they carried out a well-thought plan against the minorities of Gujarat in which a Congress MP was also among those killed.

''The CBI probe would further expose the nefarious designs of those who demeaned humanity by indulging in such heinous crimes,'' she said.

The riots have put the heads of all the countrymen down with shame and the fresh probe would ensure punishment to the guilty and also prevent a repeat of such communal incidents, she said.

Ms Mayawati said it was necessary to ensure justice to riot victims and to show to the entire world the democratic and secular character of India.
