Man sentenced to death for murdering wife

Tiruvallur, Oct 26 (UNI) The Tiruvallur District Court today awarded life sentence to a 28-year-old man for strangulating his wife to death, after she failed to bring dowry.

Holding that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, District Judge Nagaraj awarded two years rigorous imprisonment to the man's parents, cited as co-accused in the case.

The prosecution case was that Sivasorryanarayanan (28), the first accused, had killed his wife Sivakami (24) by strangulating her and set ablaze the body, pouring kerosene, to show that she committed self immolation.

His mother and father helped him in the crime as Sivakami, hailing from Madurai, failed to bring the dowry they had demanded, the prosecution said.

The incident took place in March 2003.

Holding the three accused guilty, the judge sentenced them and imposed fines.

If they failed to pay the fine, they should undergo six more imprisonment, the judge said.
