Mahabodhi tree under strict surveillance of FRI

Patna, Oct 26 (UNI) The internationally recognised Mahabodhi tree of Bodhgaya, where Lord Biddha achieved enlightnment, would now be under strict surveillance and looked after scientifically by the Forest Research Institute (FRI) of Dehradun.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed recently by the Mahabodhi Temple Management Committee (MTMC) and FRI.The MoU was signed for proper conservation of the tree by the FRI and as per the new rules and regulations. The holy tree would be under strict surveillance and prilgrims would not be allowed near it or to light candles or incence sticks. All movement would be monitored through cameras and close circuit televisions.

Earlier, the controversial felling of branches of the auspicious tree had triggered heat in the religious fraternity following which the state government had constituted a three member team of scientists from FRI to probe the matter.

The team comprising plant physiologist, plant pathologist and a wood scientist in their inquiry report stated that a portion of the tree had been cut over three years ago and the findings were scientifically proved.

They had also recommended urgent need for maintenance of the tree's health.

In view of the report the MTMC entrusted the FRI for scientific maintenance of the Mahabodhi tree for which the first installament of Rs 7 lakh was sanctioned to the FRI.

Ukraine court ruling unblocks path to new govt

KIEV, Oct 26 (Reuters) Ukraine's supreme administrative court has rejected claims by some political parties that the commission overseeing the Sept. 30 parliamentary election made procedural mistakes, a court official said today.
