Jail staff beat scribes covering Amarmani

Dehra Dun, Oct 26 (UNI) Journalists blocked the Haridwar Road in front of the district jail in protest against the Jail staff's lathicharge on them when they were covering the shifting of Amarmani Tripathi from the Jail to the Haridwar Jail today .

The jail staff reportedly pelted stones on the journalists and also fired five rounds in the air. Three to four photo journalists sustained injuries and cameras of a few photographers were also damaged during the scuffles. The injured had been taken for medical treatment.

After the news spread, the district journalists reached the Jail and blocked the Haridwar road demanding dismissal of the Jailor and the jail staff.

District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar and SSP Amit Sinha also reached the spot and tried to control the situation. However, the journalists refused to relent till the Jailor was terminated.

The District Magistrate said the incident would be reported to Secretay Home and the Chief Minister and appropriate action taken.

While one of the senior journalists was discussing about the scuffle with the jail staff and the journalists, one of the jail staff rung the emergency bell after which the rest of the staff came out of the jail with sticks and started thrashing and pelting stones on them, Rajan Chandel,one of the photo journalists who faced the wrath of the of jail staff, said.

According to reports, journalists in Mussoorie also jammed the Mall Road in protest against the attack on journalist in this capital city while journalists in Vikasnagar staged a chakka jam in their area in support of their colleagues.

Scuffle between journalists and the police was also reported from Haridwar when the scribes were covering Tripathi along with his wife and two other convicts being taken into Hardwar District Jail.

Tripathi, his wife and two other convicts, who were awarded life terms by Special Court in Dehradun on Wednesday in Madhumita murder case, were shifted from Dehradun District Jail to Haridwar Jail today.

Two foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Oct 26 (Reuters) Insurgents killed two soldiers from the NATO-led force in Afghanistan in an ambush in the east of the country, the force said in a statement today.
