Iran condemns US move to brand guards "terrorist"

TEHRAN, 25 Oct (Reuters) Iran condemned today a US move to brand the country's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and its Qods force a supporter of terrorism, the state broadcaster IRIB's Web site reported.

''The hostile policies of America against the respectful Iranian nation and our legal organisations are against international regulations and have no value,'' Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini was quoted as saying.

''Such policies have always failed.'' Washington today imposed sanctions on more than 20 Iranian companies, major banks and individuals as well as the Defence Ministry in a bid to force Tehran to stop uranium enrichment and curb its ''terrorist'' activities.

Some within the US administration had wanted to label the entire Guards Corps a foreign terrorist group -- the first time the United States would place the armed forces of any sovereign government on such a list.

Such measures are opposed by allies such as Russia who believe dialogue rather than more punishment or military action to halt Iran's nuclear programme, which the West fears is a cover to build nuclear bomb.

Iran denies it, saying its atomic work is to generate electricity.

The Qods force is a special unit of the Revolutionary Guard Corps and considered the most elite unit. There are varying estimates of its strength but it is in charge of Tehran's support for groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

''Such measures ... can not stop development of Iran and its legal organisations,'' Hosseini added.

''Such ridiculous measures can not rescue Americans from the crisis they themselves have created in Iraq.'' Reuters SZ VP0055

Israel set to reduce power supplies to Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM, Oct 25 (Reuters) Defence Minister Ehud Barak approved today the reduction of Israel's power supplies to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in response to Palestinian rocket attacks which the Israeli military has failed to stop. Israeli political sources said Barak's decision cleared the way for electricity cuts to begin immediately, although it was not immediately clear exactly when power would be reduced to the impoverished territory, where 1.5 million Palestinians live. Barak, a former prime minister who heads Israel's Labour Party,.....

Colombia says top guerilla leader, 18 more killed

BOGOTA, Oct 25 (Reuters) Colombian troops backed by war planes have killed a top guerrilla commander in an assault on his jungle camp, delivering another serious blow to the country's largest rebel group, authorities said today. Gustavo Rueda Diaz, known as Martin Caballero, and at least 18 other rebels were killed yesterday when marines attacked his base near the Caribbean coast, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said at a news conference. The assault hits at the command structure of the Revolutionary.....

Putin objects to sanctions against Iran

LISBON, Oct 26 (Reuters) Russian President Vladimir Putin objected on Thursday to new sanctions against Iran, saying such action would put Iran in a corner over its nuclear programme. ''Why should we make the situation worse, corner it, (Iran) threatening new sanctions?'' Putin told reporters during a visit to Lisbon. His remark followed an announcement by the United States that it would slap a new set of unilateral sanctions against Tehran, which it suspects of trying to make a nuclear bomb......
