Indian docu filmmakers to be awarded UK fellowships

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) Four Indian documentary filmakers will be awarded the UK Environment Film Fellowships to encaurage them to make documentaries on energy conservation and climate security.

Making the announcement, British High Commissioner to India, Richard Stagg CMG, ''Climate change is an important energy security issue. We want to encourage filmmakers to go out and document low carbon energy technologies, which will help ensure energy security as well as contribute to reduced emissions.'' The winners are Inder M S Kathuria, Miriam Chandy Menacherry Praveen Singh and Sashi Sivramkrishna.

Kathuria's ''In Their Elements'', focuses on the innovative Solar-Wind Hybrid System (SWHS) that is well suited for harsh weather conditions of the mountains.

Miriam Chandy Menacherry's film ''A Light Burns In The Village'' captures the efforts of villagers to generate electricity through bio diesel in a remote region of rural India while Praveen Singh's ''The Future Under Our Feet'' focuses on geothermal energy resources and its relevance in the energy mix for India.

Sashi Sivramkrishna's ''Building A Green Future...Now'' will explore the larger issues and challenges facing the Indian building industry in moving towards a more environmentally sensitive architecture.

The fellowships were announced on the occasion of World Environment Day (5 June 2007).

The High Commission received over 50 proposals covering a wide range of interesting subjects including sustainable buildings, bio-diesel, solar powered LED lights, geo-thermal energy. We are delighted with the response from these young filmmakers." Winners were selected after a careful screening process comprising eminent jury members.

AIKS members agitate in Pondy

Puducherry, Oct 26 (UNI) Volunteers of the All India Kisan Sabha here today staged a demonstration in front of the Animal Husbandry department to press their demands. They were demanding, among other things, provision of subsidy for cattle fodder and to make fodder available without any scarcity, provision of 15 per cent bonus for members of the cooperative milk producers union and payment of Rs 15 per litre as milk procurement price. Meghalaya sets new world record on guitar ensemble

Shillong, Oct 26 (UNI) Meghalaya today set a world record for the largest guitar ensemble with a performance here by guitarists from across the North Eastern states. However, there is a visible threat to this as Londoners too have decided to make a similar attempt on November 2 under the aegis of the Guitar Trade Fair. A new Guinness World Record was created with 1,730 guitarists strumming Bob Dylan's classic number 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' for more than five minutes.....

Puri-Hatia Durga Puja Special train cancelled

Bhubaneswar, Oct 26 (UNI) The East Coast Railway today cancelled the special train running between Puri and Hatia due to inadequate number of passengers. The train was scheduled to run from October 9 to November 21. As per schedule the train was to run on every Tuesdays from Puri and every Wednesdays from Hatia during this period to clear the rush during the puja season, East Coast Railway sources here said.
