Dismantling of samadhi leads to tension in Moga village

Moga, Oct 26 (UNI) Tension today gripped village Bhinderkalan of this district after a Sikh group dismantled the 'samadhi' of Baba Suman Giri near the Gurdwara also named after the Baba, who founded the village.

The district administration last evening claimed it had brought the situation under control after a group of about 250 sikhs led by Jathedar Balwant Singh of Takhat Damdama Sahib dismantled the samadhi and started an 'akhand path' in the gurdwara complex.

However, the act has caused great resentment among the villagers, who gathered in large numbers this afternoon and reconstructed the samadhi.

The village elders had also prepared a list of 300 'marjevadas' (ready to sacrifice) who pledged to protect the smadh of Baba Suman Giri, Dr Tara Singh Sandhu, member Pradesh Congress said adding that the villagers had religious sentiments attached with the smadhi and no mischief against it would be tolerated.

Heavy police force commandos were deployed in the village and also around the gurdwara and smadhi to check any untoward incident, SSP police HQ, Paramdeep Singh Sandhu said adding that the situation was tense but under control. Many senior officers were closely watching the situation.

Jathedar Nandgarh had yesterday said that the smadhi was being misused and was against the Sikh 'maryada'. The agitated villagers today removed granthi of the gurdwara whom they considered being behind this mishief of removing the samadhi .

Police claimed that efforts were on for reconcilation.
