Centre has nothing to do with local issues on SEZ

Panaji, Oct 26 (UNI) Minister of Trade and Commerce Kamal Nath today said the Centre has nothing to do with the local issues or forces opposing the establishment of Special Economic Zones(SEZ's) but is committed to helping Goa with special packages for infrastructure development.

Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of the Second Ministerial Council meeting of the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement(APTA) held in South Goa, Mr Nath said chief minister Digambar Kamat had discussed with him about the SEZ issue and the problems associated with them.

He said CM had assured him that the latter would take care of all the local issues related with the SEZ's.

Mr Nath said the Centre had notified 158 SEZ's in the country and some of them had come up with an investment of about Rs 52,000 crores in pipeline to benefit 72,500 people with employment in two years.

Two of the seven approved had been notified in Goa, where availability of land was the biggest constraint associated with the shortage of water, power, manpower and other resources in the tourist state where people had been opposing.

To another question, the minister said he could not announce the Central Assistance to Goa on different infrastructure development schemes with the code of conduct in place due to the October 31 by-election to Mormugao Parliamentary Constituency.
