AIADMK urges admn to fix MSP for paddy at Rs 1000 a quintal

Puducherry, Oct 16 (UNI) The AIADMK local unit today urged the administration to take immediate steps to fix the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy at Rs 1,000 a quintal.

A resolution adopted to this effect at the office-bearers meeting here said the party would organise agitations if the government failed to provide the MSP for paddy.

The meeting urged the administration to provide free power to the agriculturists, 75 per cent diesel subsidy to farmers owning tractors and fixing sugarcane price at Rs 1,500 per tonne, Party state secretary A Anbazhagan said in a statement.

Other resolutions urged the Lt Governor to prevent gambling in the pretext of shopping festival here, utilise the entire funds under SCP for the welfare of Dalits, 15 per cent bonus to members of the cooperative milk producers union, prevent illegal sand quarrying in the Sankarabharani river besides condemning the government for winding up the monsoon session of the assembly in ten minutes, among other things.

Israeli troops raid Gaza, kill 6 militants

GAZA, Oct 26 (Reuters) Israeli troops killed six Palestinian gunmen today in some of the heaviest fighting for weeks in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical and militant sources said. Two Israeli troops were wounded, the army said, as three separate raids were mounted into the territory, backed by air strikes. Seven Palestinian militants and three civilians were wounded, hospital staff said. Fighters from Hamas, the Islamist group which controls Gaza, were joined by other militants in battles that began overnight......

China says opposed to US sanctions against Iran

BEIJING, Oct 26 (Reuters) China indicated today it opposed the latest U.S. economic sanctions on Iran, warning that what it called rash steps could ''complicate'' the nuclear standoff with Tehran. Washington announced the new sanctions yesterday, accusing Tehran's Revolutionary Guard of spreading weapons of mass destruction. Now Beijing has joined Moscow in voicing opposition to the move. ''China has always been opposed to imposing sanctions too rashly in international relations,'' Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said in a short statement published.....

Iran closer to nuclear bomb, emigre opposition says

BRUSSELS, Oct 26 (Reuters) Iran may be closer to developing nuclear weapons than three to eight years believed by the UN nuclear watchdog, the country's emigre opposition said today. And changing Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, showed the country no longer needed to play for time in negotiations to push ahead with its nuclear programme, the National Council of Resistance of Iran said. The group was the first to report in 2002 the existence in Iran of uranium enrichment facility.....
